Wine in Barcelona and Catalonia
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, which is renowned for its stunning vineyards and delicious wines. Whether you are a wine connoisseur or just enjoy drinking a glass or two, Barcelona has something to offer for every wine lover. From exploring the traditional cellars in the countryside to tasting the best local wines in cosy bars, a wine-tasting tour in Barcelona is a perfect way to immerse yourself in Catalonia’s wine culture.

Wine Regions in Catalonia
There are 12 DO (Denomination of Origin) wine regions in Catalonia, each with its own unique characteristics and wine styles. The closest wine regions to Barcelona are as follows, with most Barcelona wine tours involving visits to these areas:
- Penedès DO: This is the largest and most well-known wine region in Catalonia. The Penedès is known for its sparkling wines (Cava) and still wines made from indigenous grape varieties such as Xarel-lo, Macabeu, and Parellada. A visit to Montserrat is often combined with a trip to Penedès.
- Alella DO: This wine region is just north of Barcelona, close to the Mediterranean Sea. The wines produced here are mainly white, made from Pansa Blanca and Garnacha Blanca grapes.
- Pla de Bages DO: This wine region is known for its dry and sunny climate. The wines produced here are mainly red, made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah grapes, with some excellent white wines from the native Picapoll grape.
- Priorat DOQ: Priorat is one of only two wine regions in Spain with DOQ (Denominació d’Origen Qualificada) status due to its consistently high quality (the other is La Rioja). This region in the Tarragona province is known for powerful, complex reds, made with local Garnatxa and Carinyena grapes as well as international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot.

Taste Malvasia Wine at an Urban Vineyard in Sitges
The Centre d’Interpretació de la Malvasia de Sitges, or CIM, is dedicated to preserving and sharing the story of Malvasia de Sitges, a sweet white wine that has been made in the town for centuries. Sitges is just 30 minutes south of Barcelona by train and on the edge of the Penedes wine region.
No transport is included but if you take a day trip to Sitges or spend more time here, I highly recommend visiting and tasting Malvasia wine!
The CIM is housed in historic buildings belonging to the old Hospital de Sant Joan Baptista. The centre now maintains a small urban vineyard in Sitges and makes different wines from the grapes – not just the sweet Malvasia wine, but sparkling and still white wines as part of the Penedes DO too.
I visited the CIM and was amazed to find that the funds from the wine sales go into supporting the hospital, which is now a care home for the elderly. It is a fantastic project, and the tour includes a visit to the vineyard and hospital chapel, and the small museum dedicated to Malvasia grapes and wine in the 18th-century wine cellar.
Although the wine is now made off-site, the visit also includes tastings of different Malvasia wines. My personal favourite was the ancestral sparkling wine, which was fabulous! If you don’t have time for a full visit, you can visit the wine bar for a glass of wine or two.

The tour focuses on Anna de Codorníu, the last person in the family to have the surname Codorníu. You will begin the tour in the Puig Room before moving on to the “Cava Cathedral,” a historical building that was designed by Modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.
The visit continues to the museum and the Codorniu cellars, where visitors can learn about the traditional method of making cava, a Spanish sparkling wine that Codorníu is famous for. The tour continues with a tasting session, where visitors can taste three different cava wines, accompanied by a small appetiser.
The Codorníu winery is an iconic institution and famous all over the world, so no visit to Penedes is complete without coming here. While you are in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, have lunch at a local restaurant and visit some of the other cava cellars in the town to try more delicious cava.
This is a perfect tour for independent travellers who want to try the best cava in Barcelona, and are happy to explore afterwards on their own. There are also different kinds of tours at the winery, you can read more about the tours and the winery here.

The tour begins with transport in a mini-bus from the pickup point at Port Olimpic in Barcelona, and after a 20-minute drive we arrived at the winery where we had a guided tour of the vineyards and cellars with a small group. We tasted four different wines from the winery, including cava, two white wines and a red, and enjoyed beautiful views of the town and the Mediterranean sea beyond.
As the rest of the group had booked a different activity, my friend and I were given picnic baskets and a map which took us on a little adventure through the vineyard, where we found a picnic table set up next to the rows of vines. Lunch was simple but delicious, with bread and tomato, Spanish omelette, cheese and charcuterie and fruit for dessert – with a bottle of wine of course!
It was such a unique and fun experience, we loved it!
