Barcelona Chocolate History

Chocolate has a particularly deep connection with Barcelona because the city was one of the first ports in Europe where cacao arrived after the Spanish Conquest in the Americas. Cocoa beans were brought back from the New World in the early 16th century, most likely through trade routes connecting the Caribbean and Mexico with Seville and Barcelona.

From there, chocolate spread quickly among Spain’s elite. At first, it was consumed as a bitter drink, much like the Aztecs had prepared it, before sugar and spices such as cinnamon and vanilla were added to suit European tastes.

By the 17th century, Barcelona had become a hub for chocolate production. The city’s port was vital for importing cacao, and guilds of chocolate makers were established to regulate and protect the trade.

Drinking chocolate became especially popular in Catalonia, seen both as a luxury and a social ritual, enjoyed in cafes and by the aristocracy. By the 18th century, chocolate had become more accessible to the middle classes, and Barcelona’s reputation as a chocolate city was firmly established.

In the 19th century, industrialisation transformed the chocolate business. Barcelona was at the forefront of mechanising chocolate production, which allowed brands like Chocolate Amatller to flourish.

This delicious legacy is still strong with chocolate in Barcelona today.  Historic brands like Chocolate Amatller are still here, delighting chocolate lovers, while newer locally-owned businesses like Kina Chocolates are also producing high-quality chocolate and designing new experiences to bring more chocolate pleasure to residents and visitors.

History of Chocolate Amatller & Chocolate Tasting in Barcelona

This is the activity that inspired me to write this whole blog post, as I’d booked this class to celebrate a friend’s birthday.

Amatller is one of the most important Barcelona chocolate brands. Gabriel Amatller began producing chocolate in 1797, in a Barcelona chocolate factory in El Born neighbourhood.  As techniques and tastes developed over the years, Chocolate Amatller created high-quality chocolates that were beloved in Barcelona, Catalonia and beyond.

The success of the chocolate business allowed Antoni Amatller (grandson of Gabriel) to commission Modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch to design the stunning Casa Amatller on Passeig de Gràcia (right next to Gaudí’s Casa Batlló). Casa Amatller is now a museum that you can visit, and the chocolate shop inside the building also has a café selling hot chocolate which you can get as an extra included in your ticket.

More recently, in 2025, Chocolate Amatller bought an emblematic store close to their original factory in El Born.  It’s here in this Born store where Chocolate Amatller offer their chocolate tasting experience that my friends and I loved!  We started with a short video about the history of chocolate in Barcelona and the history of the Amatller family and then had a guided chocolate tasting.

Our host talked us through each piece of chocolate we tasted (4 different varieties) and we learned which flavours to look out for.  Then we got to grind our own cocoa beans to blend our own chocolate, before finishing with a cup of smooth hot chocolate.

We then had time to taste some more samples and buy some more chocolate from the store.  If you love chocolate, you will love this chocolate tasting in Barcelona ➡️ Check prices and availability here

A Bean-to-Bar Chocolate Making Class in Barcelona with Kina Chocolates

Kina Chocolates was founded in Barcelona in 2014, inspired by founder Oscar’s time working in a chocolate museum in Peru. I loved this founder story as I went to a chocolate workshop in Peru while I was backpacking in South America in 2015, so it brought back happy memories for me!

While he was living and working in the world of cocoa cultivation, Oscar learned about the dedication of farmers and the importance of preserving and supporting small businesses in chocolate producing regions of Peru and Latin America.

When he returned to Barcelona, he created Kina as a way to honour those roots, focusing on ethical sourcing, sustainability, and celebrating the flavour of single-origin beans and chocolate.

As well as producing award-winning chocolate, Kina offers chocolate workshops where you can experience the chocolate-making process from start to finish. Check out their bean to bar chocolate workshop on GetYourGuide:

Eat Chocolate & Xurros (Churros)

Thick gloopy hot chocolate and long, finger-shaped donuts to dip are a heavenly combination, especially on a cold day.

Xurros (in Catalan) or Churros (in Spanish) are made from a simple dough of flour, water, and salt, piped through a star-shaped nozzle and fried until golden brown. They are often dusted with sugar and can be straight, looped, or spiral-shaped.  Long straight ones are best for dipping in hot chocolate!

The hot chocolate here in Spain is much thicker than standard drinking chocolate. It’s made with dark chocolate, milk or water, and sometimes cornstarch to create a pudding-like consistency, perfect for dipping churros.

Xurros are a common breakfast or afternoon snack in Spain, and one of the most traditional foods to eat in Barcelona. You can find them in Xurrerías (specialist Xurro shops) where you buy them in a paper cone to eat on the go as street food, or take a seat and enjoy them more in a more leisurely manner in cafés – especially traditional cafes known as granges.

For extra indulgence, order a suizo chocolate which is topped with whipped cream!

These are my favourite places to eat churros and chocolate in Barcelona:

Granja M. Viader

Granja M. Viader is one of Barcelona’s oldest cafés, founded in 1870 as a dairy shop and still a popular family-owned café in El Raval neighbourhood.  As well as serving delicious hot chocolate and churros and other desserts like Crema Catalana, it is the birthplace of Cacaolat, the iconic bottled chocolate milk, which is a national favourite and a lighter option if you don’t fancy a cup of thick hot chocolate.

Granja La Pallaresa

Granja La Pallaresa is one of the most famous places in Barcelona for churros and chocolate. Open since 1947 on Carrer de Petritxol, it serves a rich, thick hot chocolate that pairs perfectly with crisp churros or the lighter sponge biscuits known as melindros.

Granja Dulcinea

Just a few doors away, Granja Dulcinea, has been serving sweet treats and hot chocolate since 1941. It has a cosy, old-fashioned interior and the hot chocolate here is especially intense and indulgent, best enjoyed with a side of churros of course!

Xurreria Dels Banys Nous

Xurreria Dels Banys Nous is a tiny takeaway shop in the Gothic Quarter that specialises in freshly fried churros served in paper cones. It is simple, affordable, and ideal for grabbing a quick snack while exploring the narrow streets of the Gothic.

Xurreria Laietana

Xurreria Laietana, on Via Laietana, is known for its extra crunchy churros and straightforward, no-frills service. It is popular with locals and a traditional and inexpensive way to enjoy tasty churros with a cup of hot chocolate.

Xurreria Trebol

Xurreria Trebol in Gràcia has been open since the 1950s and is especially popular late at night as it is open 24 hours a day over the weekend!  As well as classic churros and hot chocolate, they make filled xurros too with flavours like Kinder Bueno and chocolate hazelnut, so it is a fun choice if you want to try something a little different!

Visit the Barcelona Chocolate Museum

The Barcelona Chocolate Museum is a great option for kids, but adults might find this a little underwhelming as it is quite smal.  It’s not expensive though, at €7 per adult and children over 7 and it’s free for kids under 7.

The museum traces the history of chocolate, from the cocoa bean and drinking chocolate in Latin America through to modern chocolate production, with information displayed in Catalan, Spanish, French and English.  There is also a display of antique chocolate making machinery.

Then there are some models made entirely of chocolate, including animals, cartoon characters like Tin Tin, and other famous icons like the Sagrada Familia.  The highlight is your entry ticket is an actual chocolate bar!  Then you can browse the shop and café to eat some chocolate too.

It’s close to Ciutadella Park and could take around 45 minutes to an hour of time, plus extra time in the café.

Torron or nougat is another very popular sweet treat in Catalonia, and Torrons Vicens is one of the top producers of nougat.  This museum is an exhibition space inside the Torrons Vicens store on La Rambla, and takes you through the history of nougat with a selection of nougat and chocolate for you to try.

There is a dizzying array of torrons, and some unusual chocolate flavours from Xocolata Jolonch, Albert Adria’s chocolate brand, such as white chocolate and passion fruit or s’mores flavour!  If you’re just interested in tasting the nougat without the museum, the store offers small free samples as you go in.

The Best Chocolate Shops in Barcelona

If you would like to buy (and potentially sample) some amazing chocolate in Barcelona, these chocolate shops are a mix of traditional Catalan businesses and modern brands who have built on Barcelona’s chocolate traditional to create new and exciting flavours.

I’ve already mentioned some above as they also offer experiences, but for a quick reference list here are the top Barcelona chocolate shops for souvenirs to take home or to eat at any time you like!

Xocolata Amatller

Chocolate Amatller now has three chocolate shops in Barcelona.  A small one inside Casa Amatller, a larger one next to La Pedrera and a new flagship store in El Born, where you can do the chocolate tasting experience I mentioned above.  They sell chocolate bars and bonbons in beautiful Modernist packaging that reflects the Amatller family’s long legacy in chocolate-making.

Fargas

Fargas is a charming little shop in the Gothic Quarter that has been making chocolate in Barcelona since 1827.  Although this isn’t the original location (originally it was on the corner a few doors down), they still have the original chocolate grinder in the shop, and conserved as much of the original decor, fixtures and fittings as possible.

They have a wonderful selection of bonbons, chocolate bars and the original recipe “xocolata popular”.  The most popular chocolates here include caramelised hazelnuts or almonds coated in chocolate, and the macerated cherry & cognac bonbons.

Kina Chocolates

Kina Chocolates in Gràcia honours the bean-to-bar philosophy with respect for origin and craft. Founder Óscar García works directly with small-scale cocoa producers, roasting, grinding, and creating bars that showcase pure cocoa without unnecessary additives.

Bombons Blasi

Bombons Blasi is a fourth-generation family-run chocolate shop in the Sant Gervasi neighbourhood, offering over 200 varieties of chocolates.  It’s a local spot, so don’t expect them to speak fluent English, but you can be sure of amazing chocolate!

Simón Coll

Simón Coll is a traditional chocolate maker from Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, just outside Barcelona, where the family has been producing chocolate since 1840. Still run by the same family six generations later, they make a wide range of chocolate bars and sweets, including the historic Amatller brand which they acquired in the 1970s.

Their store in Barcelona sells a variety of Simon Coll and Amatller chocolates, including hot chocolate and beautifully designed chocolate cups.

Cacao Sampaka

Cacao Sampaka offers a dazzling array of artisan chocolate bars and pralines, many made with single-origin beans.  Their imaginative flavour combinations include things like gin & tonic or saffron-infused chocolates. Each bar is labelled with tasting notes, making it ideal for chocolate connoisseurs and curious tasters!

More Traditional Businesses for Chocolates & Other Sweet Treats

While these emblematic businesses don’t specialise in chocolate, they all sell delicious chocolate and have a range of other tasty things to eat too.  I always love supporting traditional businesses, and you won’t regret visiting these for chocolates in Barcelona!

La Colmena

Founded in 1849, La Colmena is one of Barcelona’s oldest pastry and sweet shops, right next to Jaume 1 Metro station.  La Colmena has a selection of chocolates as well as traditional marzipan treats, Catalan pastries and more.  At Easter they also have some incredible “mones de pasqua” chocolate figures that godparents traditionally gift to their godchildren.

Pastisseria Santa Clara

This bakery, close to La Colmena, has been selling sweets, cakes and pastries since 1834.  As well as their selection of chocolates, it’s hard not to fall in love with their cakes – the one topped with crema catalana is my favourite!

Torrons La Campana

Torrons La Campana is a family-run shop in El Born, established in 1890 and renowned for its high-quality turrón (nougat) and other traditional sweets.  La Campana sells chocolates and ice cream as well as a variety of turrón flavours, including classic almond and chocolate-infused varieties.

La Casa de Gispert

La Casa de Gispert specialises in gourmet products, including a curated selection of chocolates and cocoa-based treats including chocolate-coated roasted nuts. Tucked away behind the Santa Maria del Mar church, the store still has its wood-burning roasting oven dating from 1851, which they continue to use for roasting nuts today.

Pastisseria Escribà is a historic patisserie on La Rambla where you can find traditional pastries and Catalan classics as well as chocolates. Under the guidance of fourth-generation pastry chef Christian Escribà, its artistic creations include elaborate chocolate sculptures and cakes.

Well, I hope that has inspired you to try some of the incredible chocolate in Barcelona.  I can’t say that this article was difficult to research – eating Barcelona chocolate is hardly a hardship – but there is still more to discover so if you have any more tips for me, please comment below or head over to our Facebook group to share your favourites!
